Traditional Healing Mat
This painting depicts a traditional healing mat performed on sand. The dotting represents fingerprints on the earth’s surface. The process within healing is complex and involves the warming of the sands laced with concentrically circles and movements that spreads out the health issue to allow a transformative effect. There is little recognised nor valued in Aboriginal healing practices, with evidence to suggest this has been a more secretive practice due to colonisation. Yet in the last decades this is now being invigorating as a culturally appropriate measure in addressing illnesses from a cultural perspective. The rhythmical patterning is detailed and time consuming, as healers work with not only one client but the whole community to ensure successful outcomes.
